Rabies Outbreak Spreads in Northern Israel and West Bank, Raising Public Health Alarm
A growing rabies outbreak is causing serious concern in northern Israel and the West Bank, with recent cases highlighting the escalating public health risk. Muhammad Salah Hassan, a 43-year-old man from Bizzariya near Nablus, died after contracting rabies from a stray dog bite about three weeks prior. Despite seeking initial treatment at a private hospital in Nablus, his condition worsened, and delayed vaccination led to his death. This case underscores the loss of control over the stray dog population in the West Bank and the threat posed to local residents.
Within Israel, the number of confirmed rabid animals is nearing 90 cases this year, approaching last year's record of 103. In the north, an unusual incident involved a rabid badger attacking workers near the settlement of Eilat HaShahar in the Upper Galilee. Additionally, a rabid jackal was found near a winery in the Golan Heights, and a rabid fox was detected near Rosh Pina. Health authorities in Safed urge anyone exposed to suspicious animals in the Eilat HaShahar area between July 2 and July 16, 2026, to seek immediate medical care.
The Ministry of Health emphasizes prompt wound cleaning and urgent treatment after any animal bite or scratch. Parents are advised to check if their children had contact with potentially infected animals, and pet owners must ensure vaccinations are current. Veterinary and health officials call for a coordinated, well-funded interministerial task force to implement continuous epidemiological monitoring, real-time information sharing, widespread vaccination of domestic and wild animals, humane reduction of stray dog populations, and increased distribution of oral vaccines for wildlife.
Rabies is nearly 100% fatal once symptoms appear but is entirely preventable with timely vaccination. Without swift, systemic action, further human fatalities are likely. Dr. Michael Ettinger, head of the Israeli Veterinary Doctors Association, stresses that isolated responses are insufficient and that rabies does not respect administrative or political boundaries, making coordinated regional efforts essential.
