Religious Zionist Rabbis Defend IDF Soldiers Amid Criticism from Lithuanian Leader

The leadership of the Religious Zionist rabbinical organization "Torat Ha'aretz Ha'Tova" issued a special statement responding to recent harsh criticisms directed at IDF soldiers and the Religious Zionist community. The rabbis expressed deep respect and gratitude for the soldiers risking their lives on the battlefield, emphasizing that military service and dedication to the state are great mitzvot and an immense privilege. They lamented that during the solemn period of Bein HaMetzarim, dedicated to mourning the destruction of the Temple, some voices chose to spread divisive rhetoric that disparages the devotion of these fighters and their community instead of offering support and encouragement.

The statement, signed by the organization's president Rabbi Yaakov Ariel and board members Rabbis David Hai Cohen, Eitan Eiseman, Shmuel Eliyahu, and Arziel, called for increased unity and caution in speech, citing the biblical commandment to guard one's tongue from evil. They referenced rabbinic teachings urging those insulted not to insult back, highlighting the importance of love among Jews. The rabbis affirmed that the Religious Zionist community and its soldiers will continue to lead with courage and unconditional love, refusing to be swayed by harsh words.

The statement also addressed the sharp criticism from Lithuanian community leader Rabbi Dov Lando, who harshly condemned Religious Zionist yeshiva students supporting IDF enlistment. In a meeting with the Mir Yeshiva leadership, Rabbi Lando accused the state of sending soldiers to wars not only for rescue but also "for the honor of the state," implying that killing in such wars is tantamount to murder. Rabbi Lando later clarified that his words were distorted by outsiders unfamiliar with his worldview, emphasizing the need to avoid ideological disputes during the Bein HaMetzarim period and reaffirming his respect for Torah scholars and their traditions.

This exchange highlights ongoing tensions within the broader religious community in Israel regarding military service and the role of Religious Zionism.
