Man Charged After Violent Outburst at Haifa Post Office Over Cash Withdrawal

George Khawa, a 53-year-old resident of Haifa, was indicted on Tuesday at the Haifa Magistrate's Court for causing damage to a post office branch in the German Colony neighborhood. The incident occurred last Monday when Khawa attempted to withdraw cash but was denied due to not presenting an ID. He then became violent, banging on the counter and verbally abusing the clerk, Kaltoum. The branch manager, Ahmad, escorted him out, but Khawa took a metal rod and smashed the post office windows. When Ahmad confronted him, Khawa swung the rod at his head in an attempted assault.

Police officers from the Haifa station arrived on the scene, where Khawa resisted arrest, pushed a female officer, and kicked another officer named Taha. While detained in the police vehicle, Khawa threatened the female officer, saying, "I can kill you, I don't care about all the Jews," despite the responding officers being of Arab descent. The Haifa District Prosecution Unit has requested to extend Khawa's detention until the conclusion of legal proceedings, citing his extensive criminal record and a prior suspended sentence from 2023 for similar offenses, which did not deter him from reoffending.

The case highlights ongoing challenges with violent incidents at public service locations and the legal system's response to repeat offenders. The prosecution's motion for extended detention aims to ensure public safety and judicial process integrity as the case proceeds.
