Health Expert Advises Proper Hydration and Diet Preparation Ahead of Tisha B'Av Fast
Ahead of the Tisha B'Av fast, clinical dietitian Liron Levi appeared on Channel 14's "Israel Morning" program to provide a comprehensive guide on preparing the body for the challenging fast. She emphasized the importance of starting preparation several days in advance, especially given the high temperatures during this season. Levi recommended increasing water intake gradually, drinking at least one glass of water every hour days before the fast, while avoiding sugary drinks and natural juices due to their high sugar content. She warned against trying to compensate by drinking large amounts of fluids just before the fast, explaining the body cannot absorb such quantities effectively.
Levi also advised reducing caffeine intake gradually in the days leading up to the fast, as coffee acts as a diuretic and can cause dehydration and withdrawal symptoms. She suggested moderation rather than complete abstinence, recommending cutting down from four to five cups to two cups daily. Regarding nutrition, Levi stressed the importance of consuming complex carbohydrates such as legumes, root vegetables, quinoa, brown rice, and whole grains to build glycogen stores. Balanced meals including proteins, fats, and carbohydrates are essential.
For the meal breaking the fast, Levi cautioned against overeating or arriving overly hungry, which can cause digestive discomfort like bloating and heartburn. She praised traditional foods like lentil stew and eggs for their fiber, protein, antioxidants, and vitamins, which support a balanced recovery after the fast. Her advice aims to help individuals avoid dehydration, headaches, and fatigue, enabling a healthier and more balanced fasting experience.
