Sheba Medical Center Plans Major Expansion With Metro Station and 3,300 Beds by 2045

The National Infrastructure Committee has approved a master plan to significantly expand Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer by 2045. The project, designated a national infrastructure initiative, aims to double the hospital's area and increase its inpatient beds from 1,860 to 3,303 to meet the growing population needs of the Tel Aviv metropolitan area and facilitate the evacuation of the adjacent Tel Hashomer military base.

Key elements of the plan include the construction of new hospital buildings featuring two rooftop helipads in addition to the existing ground-level helipad. A major urban design change involves removing the current fences around the hospital campus to open it up to the city of Ramat Gan, creating public spaces such as pathways, plazas, and parks that will connect the hospital with nearby neighborhoods.

Transportation infrastructure will be enhanced with the addition of a metro station on the M3 line within the hospital grounds and a nearby station on the purple light rail line. A 600-meter corridor will link these stations, improving access for staff, patients, and visitors. The development also incorporates solar panels, landscape improvements, and preservation of historic buildings.

Benny Arviv, Deputy Chairman of the National Planning Headquarters and Acting Chairman of the committee, described the plan as a crucial national project addressing future healthcare needs. Naava Elinsky-Radaei, the committee’s planner, emphasized the integration of hospitals into the urban fabric with direct public transport and public space connections. Ramat Gan Mayor Carmel Shama-Hacohen called it an important urban initiative for the city's eastern area, strengthening healthcare and urban development. Sheba's Deputy CEO Yehuda Katorza highlighted the plan as a step toward building the "health city of the future."
