IDF Halts Airstrike After Mistaking Settlement Activists for Militants Near Syrian Border

About two weeks ago, an unusual and dangerous incident occurred near the Israel-Syria border in the Hermon area. At night, five suspects were spotted close to the border, prompting the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to assess them as a militant cell attempting to infiltrate Israeli territory. The situation was classified as an immediate threat, leading to the deployment of "Zik" aircraft prepared to carry out an airstrike against the suspects.

However, just seconds before the attack, observers noticed the suspects were wearing traditional Jewish sidelocks (payot), leading to a halt in the planned strike. A swift investigation revealed that the individuals were not militants but activists from the "Pioneers of Bashan" movement, which advocates for establishing settlements in Syrian territory. These activists repeatedly enter the area illegally, disrupting security forces' operations.

The IDF confirmed the incident and condemned the activists' actions, describing them as criminal offenses that endanger lives. The military called on law enforcement agencies to take firm action against those involved and to address this recurring issue decisively.
