Yair Golan Tops Democratic Party Primary List After Labor-Meretz Merger

The Democratic Party, formed by the merger of Labor and Meretz, released the results of its first primary elections on Monday evening after ten hours of voting. Yair Golan secured the top spot on the party list, followed by Naama Lazimi, Gilad Kariv, Efrat Rayten, and Yair (Yaya) Pink. A total of 51 candidates competed for positions on the list, with about ten considered realistic contenders. The primary served as a key test for the new party's identity, the influence of protest leaders within it, and Golan's ability to build a list capable of joining a broad government coalition.

The party reported a 46% turnout within the first three hours, with over 97,000 members voting digitally by the 7 p.m. closing time. The digital voting system reportedly operated smoothly throughout the day. Despite a court ruling encouraging media access, Channel 14 was barred from covering the primary event, highlighting ongoing tensions regarding media coverage rights.

This primary marks the first electoral challenge for the Democratic Party since the Labor and Meretz merger. Both parties had experienced significant declines in recent years: Meretz failed to enter the last Knesset, Labor shrank to four seats, and the Zionist left gradually lost public support. The finalized top 20 candidates include notable figures such as Gabi Leski, Omri Ronen, Michal Rozin, and others, reflecting a blend of veteran politicians and protest movement leaders.
