Apple iPhones Offer Long Lifespan Despite Upcoming Price Hikes, Experts Say
As Apple prepares to raise iPhone prices due to memory chip shortages, users face the decision of whether to upgrade or keep their current devices. Apple is known for its exceptional long-term software support, with the upcoming iOS version announced at WWDC 2026 set to support the iPhone 11, released in 2019. This means that new models like the iPhone 16 or 17 will receive security updates at least until 2031. Popular apps such as WhatsApp will continue functioning on devices running iOS 15.1 or later, ensuring usability for years.
Physically, iPhones have become more durable, especially from the iPhone 17 Pro series onward, which features a robust aluminum unibody design replacing titanium. Users often report using the same iPhone for over five years without major repairs aside from battery replacements. Battery degradation remains the main limiting factor; iPhone 15 and newer models retain about 80% of their original battery capacity after 1,000 charge cycles. Once battery health falls below 80%, the device recommends battery replacement and may reduce performance to prevent unexpected shutdowns.
While replacing the battery can extend device life, aging processors and limited memory eventually struggle with newer operating systems. However, Apple has addressed performance concerns in iOS 27 by enhancing stability and speed, improving the experience even on older devices. Ultimately, if an iPhone is functioning well and its battery health is good, there is no urgent need to upgrade despite the looming price increases.
