Gur Rebbe Pledges to Lead Protests Against Military Detentions of Haredi Youth

The Gur Rebbe, Rabbi Yaakov Aryeh Alter, announced he will personally attend protests outside Military Prison 10 whenever a young Haredi man is detained for draft evasion. This declaration, reported by Kan News on Monday evening, signals a significant show of strength by the Gur Hasidic community, with thousands expected to join the demonstrations. At 87 years old, the Rebbe rarely leaves his home, making his commitment a notable escalation and direct support for draft evaders.

Another protest is planned later Monday evening at the military prison in Beit Lid following recent arrests. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned remarks made by another prominent Haredi leader, Rabbi Dov Lando, who harshly criticized the Religious Zionist community. Rabbi Lando was recorded in a private conversation accusing Religious Zionists of inciting murder by supporting soldiers who kill, calling it "murder" and labeling them as wicked. The conversation was with Rabbi Eliezer Yehuda Finkel, head of the Mir Yeshiva and member of the Degel HaTorah Council of Torah Sages.

Supporters of Rabbi Lando argued his comments were taken out of context, clarifying that he was discussing the theoretical morality of state decisions to engage in non-defensive wars, not individual soldiers. Meanwhile, Likud Minister Eli Cohen criticized the legislative blitz, calling parts of it unnecessary. Netanyahu responded to Rabbi Lando's remarks by calling them "shocking" and affirming that Israeli soldiers deserve respect.
