Khalil al-Hayya was appointed on Monday as the new head of Hamas's political bureau, according to an official statement by the terrorist organization. Al-Hayya was chosen over senior Hamas figure Khaled Mashal, who reportedly competed for the position. This role had been vacant since the killing of Yahya Sinwar in October 2024. Sinwar had assumed the position following the assassination of his predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran in July 2024. The political bureau serves as the leadership council managing Hamas's political affairs. This leadership change comes amid reports that Hamas currently has 25,000 operatives and has been conducting executions across the Gaza Strip, with some militants reportedly sleeping in the streets of Rafah.
