Hamas Appoints Khalil al-Hayya as New Political Bureau Chief Following Sinwar's Death

Hamas has announced the appointment of Khalil al-Hayya as the new head of its political bureau, succeeding Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in Gaza during the recent conflict. Al-Hayya, known as a close ally of Sinwar and aligned with Iran, was chosen over Khaled Meshaal, the former Hamas leader abroad associated with Qatar and Turkey and a more independent stance from Tehran. Hamas stated that following the selection of a permanent political bureau chief, the temporary "quintet council" will be dissolved, and the organization will return to its traditional leadership structure.

As the new leader, al-Hayya will face critical decisions regarding the future governance of the Gaza Strip, the location of Hamas's headquarters, and the management of relations with Iran and its allies. Currently based in Qatar, al-Hayya manages Hamas's activities in Gaza and has been one of Sinwar's closest confidants. He has led Hamas's delegation in hostage negotiation talks and is currently involved in discussions related to the second phase of the Trump administration's plan.
