Hapoel Tel Aviv sweeps Jerusalem to reach the finals
Hapoel Tel Aviv beat Hapoel Jerusalem 89-81 on Thursday night to complete a 3-0 semifinal sweep and advance to the Israeli Premier League playoff finals. The Reds, coached by Dimitris Itoudis, will play in the championship series for the third time in four years and are now three wins away from their first title in 56 years.
The team benefited from an earlier ruling by the court, which accepted its appeal and awarded Jerusalem a technical loss after Sunday’s game was disrupted, leaving Hapoel Tel Aviv with a 2-0 lead before tipoff. Even so, Jerusalem pushed the game deep into the fourth quarter before the hosts took control with a strong final period.
Vasilije Micic scored 26 points and Yam Madar added 22, combining for 48 of Hapoel Tel Aviv’s 89 points. Chris Jones also contributed 7 points and 7 assists in 17 minutes. Hapoel Tel Aviv now awaits the winner of Maccabi Tel Aviv vs. Hapoel Holon, a series that could end as soon as Friday afternoon.
