Israeli Photographer Chronicles Life-Changing Arctic Journey to Svalbard
At age 55, Israeli photographer Tal-Zehara Lavi embarked on a transformative journey to the northernmost inhabited place on Earth, Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago. Inspired years earlier by a polar bear photograph taken by wildlife photographer Roie Galitz, Lavi finally pursued her dream to experience and capture the Arctic wilderness firsthand. The trip was organized by PhotoTeva in collaboration with Arkia Airlines and Spirit Productions, marking one of Arkia’s first direct flights to Longyearbyen.
The expedition began with a challenging flight requiring specialized pilot training due to the remote Arctic location and unpredictable weather. Upon arrival, the group explored the stark beauty of Spitsbergen island, witnessing the midnight sun, retreating sea ice, and vibrant tundra life including Arctic foxes, reindeer, and numerous seabirds. They visited the Global Seed Vault near Longyearbyen, a secure repository for global crop diversity.
Over five days aboard a ship, the travelers ventured among glaciers and pack ice, observing polar bears in their natural habitat and diverse Arctic bird species such as little auks, black guillemots, and Arctic terns. The experience combined adventure with comfort, balancing cold excursions with warm meals and rest. The group also hiked in Signehamna, a protected heritage site with WWII remnants, under armed guard to ensure safety from polar bears.
Lavi reflected on the profound impact of the journey, emphasizing the privilege of witnessing such raw nature and the resilience of Arctic wildlife. She expressed hope that this once-in-a-lifetime trip would be the first of many, fulfilling a lifelong dream long postponed by family and geopolitical concerns. The trip concluded with a quiet day in Longyearbyen, capturing final images and memories before returning home.
