Former Beitar Tel Aviv Midfielder Sergey Agashkov Dies at 63 After Long Illness

Sergey Agashkov, a former Turkmen-Russian footballer who played for Beitar Tel Aviv during the 1992/93 season, has passed away at the age of 63 after a prolonged illness. Agashkov, a midfielder, appeared in 20 matches for Beitar Tel Aviv under coach Shimon Shechner, scoring two goals against Hapoel Be'er Sheva and Bnei Yehuda. During that season, the team was relegated from the National League (then the top division) to the Liga Artzit.

Born in Turkmenistan when it was part of the Soviet Union, Agashkov earned three caps for the Soviet national team in 1986. He was best known in Russia for his time with Torpedo Moscow, which issued a statement expressing condolences to his family. Besides Beitar Tel Aviv and Torpedo Moscow, Agashkov also played for Rostov in Russia, Pohang Steelers in South Korea, and Ankaragücü in Turkey.

In recent years, Agashkov worked as a youth coach at Torpedo Moscow. His death was announced shortly after Hapoel Tel Aviv defeated Beitar Jerusalem 3-1 on penalties in the Toto Cup following a 2-2 draw in regular time.
