Massive Fire Destroys 13 Homes in West Bank Settlement, Residents Evacuated
A massive fire erupted in the West Bank settlement of Havat Gilad, causing severe destruction including the burning of 13 homes, a garage, and a wood storage facility. The fire forced the complete evacuation of the settlement's residents due to immediate danger to life. Two firefighters were injured during firefighting efforts, one moderately and one lightly, and a local resident was also lightly injured after fainting.
The fire began near Mitzpe Yishai in the nearby settlement of Kedumim and quickly spread to Havat Gilad, driven by harsh weather and strong winds. Firefighters from the Samaria station initially contained the fire at Kedumim, preventing damage there, but the blaze rapidly advanced into Havat Gilad, overcoming natural barriers and consuming large open areas before reaching residential buildings.
A large-scale response was mobilized, including 45 firefighting and rescue teams, eight firefighting aircraft from the Elad firefighting squadron, and a reconnaissance helicopter. The IDF's Samaria Brigade assisted with evacuations, provided first aid, and supplied water tankers to support firefighting efforts. Fire Commissioner Major General Eyal Caspi personally oversaw operations on site.
Authorities continue extensive firefighting efforts with 41 teams working to extinguish remaining hotspots and prevent flare-ups. Police units, including aerial and drone teams, secured the area and blocked key junctions to maintain public safety and keep emergency routes clear. An interagency situation assessment defined responsibilities for ongoing operations.
A special investigation team comprising experienced fire investigators, police from the Judea and Samaria district, and security officials from Central Command and the West Bank Regional Brigade is probing the fire's cause. There is a strong suspicion that the fire was deliberately set for nationalist reasons, explaining the rapid spread of multiple fire points.
Meanwhile, firefighters also battled several significant fires in northern Israel on Saturday, including near Shamsheet in the Jezreel Valley, Kfar Vradim, and Mount Tabor. These fires were contained with no reported injuries. Northern District Commander Yair Elkaim confirmed full containment but maintained high alert for new outbreaks or to assist West Bank teams.
