Oman U18 Women's Team Records Historic Defeats at Asian Basketball Championship

The Oman U18 women's basketball team delivered one of the most lopsided performances in FIBA history during the recent Asian U18 Women's Basketball Championship Division B. The tournament, held last week and featuring only eight teams, saw Oman lose all four of their games by massive margins, drawing global attention and widespread social media coverage.

Oman lost 127-6 to Indonesia, 99-17 to India, and 111-20 to Thailand in the group stage. In the classification match for seventh place, they were defeated 126-14 by the Cook Islands. These results left Oman at the bottom of the standings with an average losing margin of 101.5 points per game.

Statistically, Oman averaged just 14.3 points per game, committed 52.5 turnovers per game, and shot poorly with 13.1% on two-point attempts, 9.5% on three-pointers, and 32% from the free-throw line. Player Mar Al Said led the team with an average of 3.5 points per game and was the only player to finish the tournament with a positive efficiency rating of +2.5.

Despite the harsh results, the tournament highlighted the challenges faced by emerging basketball nations in Asia and underscored the developmental gap in the sport. The Oman team's participation, though difficult, marks a step in their basketball journey at the continental level.
