Fire Erupts at Imam Reza Shrine Complex in Mashhad, Iran, No Damage Reported
A fire broke out at the Imam Reza shrine complex in Mashhad, Iran, specifically in the courtyard called 'Adir' within a workshop used for construction projects. The flames started during asphalt processing work by laborers at the site. Thick black smoke covered part of the pilgrimage area, but firefighting teams quickly contained the blaze. Authorities reported no injuries or damage to the tomb structure itself.
The Iranian news agency Tasnim stated that firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to the main burial areas of the nearby Goharshad Mosque. Officials have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. The shrine complex is the burial site of Ali Khamenei, the former Iranian supreme leader, who was interred there on July 9 following a prolonged funeral. Khamenei was killed on February 28, 2026, during the opening attacks of the war with Iran, along with several family members.
