Android 17 Launches with Delayed AI Features but Introduces Handy App Bubbles for Multitasking
Google officially released Android 17, but the much-anticipated artificial intelligence features, including the Gemini Intelligence system, have been postponed until later this summer. These AI capabilities were expected to enable complex, multi-step tasks across apps without manual navigation, but currently, even the latest beta versions lack these smart functionalities, focusing instead on bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements.
Despite the delay in AI integration, Android 17 introduces a notable new feature called App Bubbles. This tool enhances multitasking by allowing users to keep active apps accessible in floating bubbles, simplifying switching between applications without cluttering the home screen. For example, users can easily copy information from a document to an email by toggling between the two apps via bubbles, offering a smoother alternative to split-screen mode.
App Bubbles enable one app, like Chrome, to occupy most of the screen while another, such as WhatsApp, remains readily accessible with a single tap. While Android 17 lays the groundwork for a smarter future, the full AI-enhanced user experience is still forthcoming. Until then, App Bubbles provide an immediate productivity boost for daily tasks.
Google plans to roll out the promised AI features and AI-powered widgets later this summer, which will determine whether the upgrade meets user expectations for a truly intelligent operating system.
