Israel Honors Holocaust Survivors and Descendants in Annual 'Heroes of Beauty' Ceremony

On Tuesday, 78 Holocaust survivors and their descendants from across Israel gathered at the Bat Yam Culture Hall for the eighth annual "Heroes of Beauty" ceremony, an event honoring survivors and their families under the theme "Chain of Generations." The city of Bat Yam, hosting the event, will mark its 100th anniversary next month.

Before stepping on stage, the honorees received hair and cosmetic treatments and met with soldiers from various Israel Defense Forces units, including the Home Front Command rescue unit, Air Defense fighters, the Air Force's "Sledgehammer" unit, and the "Exemplary" personnel division. These interactions fostered bonds of friendship and respect, with survivors invited to visit IDF units.

A poignant family story was shared by Eli Yariv, Bat Yam's acting mayor, whose mother is a Holocaust survivor and whose grandson, an Air Force pilot, participated in the operation that eliminated Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut. This narrative exemplified the event's focus on the continuity of sacrifice and defense across generations.

Among the honorees was Luis Har, kidnapped on October 7 and freed by IDF and Shin Bet forces in Gaza during Operation "Golden Hand." Har, from a family carrying Holocaust memories, has turned his ordeal into a message of hope, initiating public art projects symbolizing life and the return of captives. Also honored were Helen and Abraham Hoffman, sole survivors of their families who immigrated to Israel post-Holocaust and now have extensive families with many serving in the IDF.

Special recognition was given to Moti and Rina Angrist, grandparents of captive soldier Matan Angrist, who sent a heartfelt video message from abroad. The ceremony concluded with tributes to Miriam Harel, 102, and Yaffa Einhorn, 100, both dedicated to passing on Holocaust legacy through writing and storytelling.

The event was led by retired Brigadier General Ronit Lev, who heads the volunteer initiative supporting Holocaust survivors, alongside partners including Tel Aviv's "Sela" security unit and various sponsors. The evening was hosted by Izzy Mann, a poet and songwriter, who recited a specially composed maqama celebrating the enduring cycle of generations, resilience, and hope despite adversity.
