Man Convicted of Murdering Sister’s Partner Over Air Freshener Dispute in Central Israel
The Central District Court in Lod convicted Meir Israel of murdering his sister’s partner, Gili Lugasi, in 2024 in Rishon Lezion. The unanimous verdict followed a trial led by attorney Liat Gelboam-Amir from the Central District Prosecutor’s Office. According to the court ruling, the fatal stabbing occurred after a dispute at the home of Israel and his sister, sparked by the sister spraying air freshener on the bedding, which Israel found objectionable.
The altercation escalated when the sister tried to separate the two men by locking the door, leaving Israel outside. Israel then broke into the room, threw a glass table at Lugasi, went to the kitchen, grabbed a kitchen knife with a 20 cm blade, and stabbed Lugasi multiple times. One stab wound pierced Lugasi’s chest and heart, causing his death. Israel fled the scene after the attack.
The court rejected Israel’s self-defense claim, concluding beyond reasonable doubt that he intentionally caused Lugasi’s death with seven stab wounds to the upper body. However, Israel was convicted of intentional murder rather than murder under aggravated circumstances as originally charged. The ruling noted that Israel acted with intent to kill but without a fully formed decision to do so.
Attorney Gelboam-Amir described the killing as a deliberate act of violence within a family setting without justification. She expressed hope that the verdict would provide some measure of justice to Lugasi’s family despite their loss. The case highlights how a minor domestic dispute tragically ended in death.
