Israeli Cyber Authorities Warn Public Against Fake GOV.IL Payment Messages
The National Cyber Directorate and the National Digital Directorate in Israel issued an urgent warning on Tuesday about a phishing campaign targeting the public. The campaign involves SMS messages that impersonate official GOV.IL communications, demanding payments and including malicious links. These messages appear especially convincing because on some devices they show up within existing GOV.IL message threads, creating the false impression they are legitimate government notifications.
Authorities clarified that this is not due to a breach of government systems but rather an exploitation of how SMS messages are displayed on certain devices. The cyber directorate is actively working to remove the malicious links and limit the spread of these fraudulent messages. The public is strongly advised not to click on any links in these suspicious texts, avoid entering personal or credit card information, and only make payments through direct access to official websites or personal accounts.
Anyone receiving such suspicious messages is urged to report them to the National Cyber Directorate's hotline at 119. The warning aims to protect citizens from falling victim to financial fraud and to maintain trust in official digital communications.
