Nine-Year-Old Girl Detained Near Lebanon Border in Northern Israel

On Tuesday, five girls from the "Awake North" movement, including four minors and a nine-year-old child, were detained for questioning at the Kiryat Shmona police station after attempting to cross the border into Lebanon near the Hasbani River. Israeli security forces identified the group trying to cross the sensitive border area and immediately took them into custody under heavy security.

The legal aid organization Honenu is providing the girls with legal counsel. Abraham Sofer from Honenu was present at the police station to assist the girls during their interrogation. The incident raises questions about how such a young group managed to approach the dangerous border area without earlier intervention, their motives, and why they chose the Hasbani River region, known as one of the most sensitive spots on the northern border.

The northern border has been highly tense in recent months, with the IDF recently targeting four suspects approaching the security zone in southern Lebanon who posed an immediate threat. The Hasbani River area itself has been in the public eye after a recent dramatic rescue of a man and his dog swept away by the river's current, and health warnings have been issued about water contamination there.

As of now, the Israeli police have not released an official statement or details from the initial investigation regarding the group's motives or the full scope of the event.
