WhatsApp Develops Independent Cloud Backup System for iPhone Users
WhatsApp is developing a new independent cloud backup system for iPhone users that will allow them to store chat and media backups on WhatsApp's own cloud service instead of relying solely on Apple's iCloud. This feature is currently in development and not yet available to users. According to WABetaInfo, the new system will give users the option to continue using iCloud or switch to WhatsApp's cloud service, aiming to reduce dependence on external providers and offer more autonomous backup management.
Backups stored on WhatsApp's servers will be end-to-end encrypted by default. WhatsApp plans to let users choose their preferred backup protection method, including options such as passkey encryption, a personal password, or a 64-digit encryption key. This initiative comes as WhatsApp backup sizes grow significantly, including messages, photos, videos, and other media files, which can consume substantial iCloud storage space.
Currently, the independent cloud backup feature remains in the testing phase, with no confirmed release date or guarantee that it will be rolled out to all users. WhatsApp continues to evaluate this solution alongside other features under development.
