Avi Haliva Appointed Metro Authority Chairman After Nine-Month Vacancy
After a nine-month vacancy, the Transportation Ministry's selection committee decided on Monday to appoint Avi Haliva as chairman of the Metro Authority. The appointment awaits government approval but is not expected to face obstacles. Currently, Haliva chairs the Senior Department for Government Ministries and Affiliated Units, overseeing guidance and supervision of about 50 government ministries and units.
The vacancy followed Uzi Yitzhaki's resignation as Metro Authority chairman in October 2025, after only five months in the role. Other candidates considered included former Transportation Ministry CEO Ofer Malka and Deputy Accountant General Oshrat David. This appointment is the second key leadership decision made by the ministry on the same day.
Earlier Monday, it was reported that Transportation Minister Miri Regev is advancing Avner Flor's nomination as chairman of Israel Railways. With the Knesset's dissolution imminent, the minister appears to be finalizing last-minute appointments. These moves come amid preparations for tunnel excavation in the metro project, scheduled to begin next month.
