Yedidya Meir Warns Parents to Scrutinize Haredi Military Recruitment Initiatives
Yedidya Meir has urged parents of Haredi students to carefully evaluate military recruitment programs targeting the Haredi community, following controversial remarks by Inbar Harush-Giti, a former official responsible for Haredi recruitment at the Israeli Ministry of Defense. Harush-Giti recently revealed that these recruitment efforts are part of a broader agenda aimed at dismantling the Haredi community's autonomy, not merely increasing enlistment. She emphasized the need to sever the younger generation from the leadership of senior rabbis, describing this as essential to the recruitment strategy.
Harush-Giti, who announced her candidacy with Gadi Eizenkot's party, stated at an "Israel Hayom" conference panel that the Haredim currently serving in the IDF are there because of projects she established, including the founding of Haredi Hesder yeshivas. She asserted that dismantling the Haredi autonomy is a deliberate goal embedded in policies related to education, economy, and military service. She also called for cutting off communication with the senior rabbis who lead the Haredi autonomous structure.
In response, Meir criticized these statements on the "Hitorerut" program on Kol Chai Radio, warning parents to be vigilant and critical regarding recruitment initiatives that could undermine the community's traditional frameworks. The debate highlights tensions over the integration of Haredim into the military and broader Israeli society, with significant implications for the community's future and its relationship with the state.
