Rabbi Moshe Gantz Urges Moderation in Discourse on Haredi Military Service
Rabbi Moshe Gantz, a senior disciple of Rabbi Tzvi Yehuda HaCohen Kook and former rabbi of the Shalavim Yeshiva and Kibbutz Lavi, has called for a more moderate and respectful discourse regarding the enlistment of Haredi Jews into the Israel Defense Forces. Addressing the national-religious community, he acknowledged their frustration over the issue but warned that harsh rhetoric and sanctions could harm the delicate progress made in recruiting Haredi soldiers.
Rabbi Gantz opened his statement with a direct appeal to the national-religious sector, urging them to "return to repentance" and to apply love and respect even to those who do not observe religious commandments or serve in the military. He expressed shame over the harsh language used against fellow Jews and emphasized that "Israel, even if not enlisted, is still Israel."
He noted that since the establishment of the Hasmonean Brigade, which trains enthusiastic Haredi youth for military service, the approach should be constructive and loving, as this unit is expected to inspire more Haredim to enlist over time. Rabbi Gantz cautioned against divisive rhetoric, stating that some parties seek to create conflict between the national-religious community and the Haredi public, and urged people not to assist such efforts.
In conclusion, he called for unity and understanding, blessing his audience with "May God be with you!" as he appealed for a respectful and loving dialogue on this sensitive topic.
