Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv’s Hidden Role in Jewish Outreach Revealed by ‘Kesser Yehudi’ Founder

Fourteen years after the passing of Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, a leading Torah authority known as the Posek HaDor, new insights into his extensive spiritual leadership have emerged. Rebbetzin Tzili Schneider, chairwoman and founder of the Jewish outreach organization Kesser Yehudi, shared a revealing account of Rabbi Elyashiv’s personal and meticulous guidance in establishing the group. She emphasized that Rabbi Elyashiv took responsibility for all of Klal Yisrael (the Jewish people) and regarded outreach to distant Jews as the most vital Jewish mission.

Rebbetzin Schneider recounted how she and her husband, Rabbi Gabriel Schneider, regularly consulted with Rabbi Elyashiv despite skepticism from others around him. Even when his grandson limited their meeting time due to a queue of prominent rabbis and community members waiting, Rabbi Elyashiv insisted, "Das iz klal Yisrael" (This is for all of Israel), underscoring the priority of outreach.

Addressing concerns from ultra-Orthodox scholars about exposing Torah scholars to secular Jews, Rabbi Elyashiv used a halachic analogy from the laws of meat salting to explain that those actively influencing others spiritually cannot be harmed. He instructed the organization to select strong, mature individuals capable of positively impacting others.

Rabbi Elyashiv also decisively ruled that outreach should begin with teaching the laws of Shabbat and the sanctity of the home. He viewed Shabbat observance as the core of Jewish identity and the most transformative practice for returning Jews. Today, Kesser Yehudi supports over 15,000 weekly study partnerships teaching these laws to distant Jews.

Rebbetzin Schneider highlighted that Rabbi Elyashiv’s directive to prioritize Shabbat has proven especially meaningful in recent years, inspiring outreach even to families of hostages, who embrace Shabbat observance as a source of spiritual strength. She concluded that the seeds planted by Rabbi Elyashiv continue to foster unity and holiness across the Jewish people, protecting them in their darkest moments.
