Israeli Olympic Committee Plans First Official Israeli House for Los Angeles 2028 Games

The Israeli Olympic Committee announced a groundbreaking initiative to establish the first official Israeli House at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. This facility will serve as a hub for the Israeli and Jewish communities, hosting press conferences, media activities, federation events, viewing parties, and social gatherings. Adi Bichman, the new CEO of the Israeli Olympic Committee, emphasized the significance of starting this tradition in Los Angeles, given its large Jewish population, and noted that a visit later this month will further explore the plan.

The announcement came during a press forum held two years ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics, where officials also highlighted that the 2028 Games will feature a record 36 sports disciplines and, for the first time, more female athletes than male. The opening ceremony will be split between the iconic Coliseum, which has hosted two previous Olympics, and the new SoFi Stadium, which will also host swimming events after undergoing major renovations.

Regarding the Israeli delegation, the committee does not expect an increase in athlete numbers compared to the record-sized team at Paris 2024. Several sports, including climbing, skateboarding, 49er sailing, mixed archery, beach volleyball, women’s water polo, lacrosse/flag football, and team fencing/gymnastics, are expected to debut or expand. CEO Bichman stressed adherence to international qualification standards, moving away from Israel-specific criteria used in previous Olympics.

Yael Arad, a prominent Israeli sports figure, addressed medal prospects cautiously, noting the high standards set by the Paris team, which had five natural medal candidates who all succeeded. She acknowledged the current challenging period due to the ongoing war but highlighted the significant efforts and investments being made to maintain progress.

Looking ahead, the path to Los Angeles 2028 will be particularly challenging, with the 2027 European Games in Istanbul serving as a key qualifying event across 21 Olympic sports. However, Israel’s participation in Istanbul is uncertain due to political complexities. Arad explained that the Israeli Olympic Committee is working closely with the International Olympic Committee, European Olympic Committees, and Turkish organizers to secure Israeli athletes’ participation, emphasizing the Olympic value of neutrality and the importance of overcoming political tensions to compete.
