Los Angeles Prepares for 2028 Olympics Using Existing Venues and Historic Sites

Los Angeles is gearing up to host the 2028 Summer Olympics, becoming the third city to host the Games three times after London and Paris. The city previously hosted in 1932 and 1984, with the latter considered a financial success despite the Eastern Bloc boycott. Unlike many past Olympic hosts, Los Angeles will not build any new permanent venues but will adapt over 40 existing facilities for the competitions, aiming to balance investment with expected revenue returns.

Key venues include the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, which will host half of the opening ceremony alongside the historic Coliseum, marking the first time the ceremony is split between two sites. The stadium will be transformed into the largest temporary swimming pool ever installed for the Games. The Coliseum, built in 1923 and iconic for its Olympic torch and downtown views, will host track events with a temporary running track installed over the football field.

Other venues include the BMO Stadium for flag football and lacrosse, the Intuit Dome for basketball games, and the Crypto.com Arena for basketball playoffs and gymnastics. Competitions will also take place in the San Fernando Valley, including BMX, skateboarding, modern pentathlon, and 3x3 basketball, despite summer temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. Additional events will be held in Long Beach and Venice Beach, while soccer matches will be spread across multiple U.S. cities, with the main hub at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Logistical challenges include managing traffic congestion in a city heavily reliant on private vehicles. Los Angeles is expanding public transit and implementing shuttle services and dedicated lanes to ease transportation. Ride-sharing company Uber will also provide alternative mobility options.

The Israeli delegation, including Olympic Committee Chair Yael Arad, views the Games as an opportunity to strengthen ties between the U.S. Jewish community and Israel. Significant funding from American Jewish donors is aimed at long-term development of Israeli Olympic sports rather than short-term fixes. Beach volleyball athletes Kevin Kozmichov and Ilan Elazar have shown notable progress internationally.

The Olympic Village will be located on the University of Southern California campus, converting student dormitories into athlete housing with varying air conditioning availability. Dedicated buses will transport athletes to venues, avoiding city traffic. The official 2028 Olympics merchandise store recently opened, featuring high-priced items that attracted enthusiastic buyers.

Beyond sports, Los Angeles expects the Olympics to boost its economy by attracting millions of visitors who will spend on hotels, dining, and local businesses. The city’s success will be measured by visitor numbers, length of stay, and economic impact, alongside the athletes’ medal counts.
