Ryanair Flight Window Shatters Mid-Air Due to Engine Failure Over Greece

A Ryanair flight from Thessaloniki, Greece, to Munich, Germany, experienced a dramatic incident when one of its windows shattered shortly after takeoff, causing a sudden cabin depressurization. A passenger seated next to the window was nearly sucked out but was saved by his seatbelt and fellow passengers holding him. Preliminary investigations indicate that a part of the plane's engine detached shortly after takeoff and struck the window, leading to its breakage and the rapid loss of cabin pressure.

The incident is being investigated as an Uncontained Engine Failure, a rare and dangerous malfunction where internal engine components break apart and breach the engine casing at high speed. Video footage circulating on social media shows significant engine damage, including missing fan blades. Flight tracking data reveals the aircraft returned to Thessaloniki for an emergency landing soon after the event. Notably, the same plane had returned to Thessaloniki the previous day after takeoff for unknown reasons.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has offered assistance in the investigation. The aircraft involved is a Boeing 737 NG powered by CFM56 engines, manufactured by CFM International, a joint venture between GE and Safran. The engine manufacturer has not yet commented. This incident recalls a fatal 2018 Southwest Airlines crash involving a similar engine failure and window breakage, which led to a passenger's death and prompted FAA-mandated engine casing modifications to be completed by 2028.

Tammie Jo Shults, the pilot who safely landed the Southwest flight in 2018, noted the complexity and danger of engine failures causing external aircraft damage, emphasizing the severity of such events compared to typical engine malfunctions. The Ryanair flight's safe emergency landing prevented a potential catastrophe, and investigations continue to determine the full cause and implications of the failure.
