Ryanair Passenger Partially Ejected from Plane Window Survives with Severe Injuries in Greece
A 61-year-old Serbian passenger on a Ryanair flight was partially sucked out of a plane window last week and remains hospitalized in Greece with serious injuries. The incident occurred during a flight to Germany when a window suddenly detached, exposing the man to extreme winds and rapid decompression at high altitude. His wife, Svetlana Maksimovic, described the terrifying moments to Reuters, recalling how part of his body was hanging outside the aircraft and how passengers struggled against the freezing wind to pull him back inside.
The passenger suffered severe neck and arm injuries, along with deep friction burns and cold burns. After the window broke, oxygen masks deployed amid panic and screams inside the cabin. Maksimovic administered first aid to her husband amid the chaos, noting his face and nose were severely disfigured and covered in blood. The plane made an emergency descent back to Greece, where he is currently receiving treatment at AHEPA Hospital in Thessaloniki.
Authorities are investigating the cause, focusing on a suspected metal fragment from the plane's engine that may have broken off and shattered the window. Ryanair confirmed the window detached but declined to provide further details. International investigative teams from the US and Europe are examining the structural failure that grounded the aircraft in Greece. The couple has hired legal counsel to seek accountability for the safety failure, with Maksimovic expressing concern about the long-term recovery and consequences for both of them.
