Makova Chief Rabbi Captured Sitting on Honored Chair at Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai's Tomb
A moving scene unfolded on Wednesday at the holy site of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai's cave in Meron, when the esteemed Chief Rabbi and Gaavad of Makova arrived to serve as the sandek at a brit milah for a close associate's son. Known as one of the generation's righteous figures, the Gaavad is famously modest and consistently avoids honor, refusing to sit on luxurious or padded chairs even during major family celebrations in Belz. However, this time he was photographed seated on an ornate chair while fulfilling his role as sandek, a rare moment capturing his humility and honor simultaneously.
The event took place amid a series of significant Hasidic gatherings and milestones, including a $10 million donation by philanthropist Abraham Yehuda Goldberger to the Satmar Rebbe for the acquisition of the large "Beit Rachel" institution building in Kiryat Joel, and the Vizhnitz Rebbe of London choosing to vacation in Israel's "Avirah" region near Mount Yonah. Additionally, thousands of Hasidim commemorated the yahrzeit of the late Satmar Rebbe and other revered leaders with prayers and celebrations across Israel and abroad.
In other news, the Sadigura Hasidic dispute over Jerusalem institutions escalated to the Supreme Court, and the Alexander Hasidic community in Bnei Brak laid the cornerstone for a new global center. The Zvehil Rebbe held a special tish in Zurich for the yahrzeit of his ancestor, while the Vizhnitz Rebbe of Beit Shemesh announced a historic week-long visit to the Shomron region, encouraging Hasidic settlement there.
These events reflect the vibrant spiritual and communal life within the Hasidic world, marked by deep reverence for tradition, leadership humility, and ongoing growth of religious institutions both in Israel and the diaspora.
