Rabbi Elazar Stern Urges Respectful Dress at Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai's Tomb in Meron
Ahead of the Bein Hazmanim vacation period, Rabbi Elazar Stern, the chief rabbi of Meron, issued a call for visitors to dress respectfully when visiting the tomb of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. Each year, thousands travel to this sacred site in northern Israel, often stopping to pray during their trips in the Galilee region. Rabbi Stern expressed concern over many visitors wearing inappropriate attire such as short clothing or swimwear, which he described as disrespectful to the sanctity of the site.
He referenced a story about the holy figure Or HaChaim, who upon ascending to the tomb, was overwhelmed by its holiness and exclaimed on his unworthiness to enter such a sacred place. Rabbi Stern emphasized that while modern visitors may not perceive the spiritual intensity as Or HaChaim did, they should still use their intellect and heart to understand the importance of entering the holy site in dignified clothing. He urged Torah scholars and all visitors to wear proper outer garments fitting the sanctity of the location.
Rabbi Stern concluded by citing the verse "Those who honor Me I will honor, but those who despise Me will be lightly esteemed," highlighting that respecting the holiness of the site brings divine favor and acceptance of prayers. His message serves as a reminder to maintain reverence and decorum at one of Judaism's most revered pilgrimage destinations.
