20th Century Studios officially announced Monday night that filming has begun on a sequel to the comedy "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion."

The actresses Lisa Kudrow, from "Friends," and Mira Sorvino, from "Mighty Aphrodite," who played the lead characters in the original film, shared a photo from the set and confirmed their participation in the project. In addition to Kudrow and Sorvino, other cast members from the original production will return, including Alan Cumming, Janeane Garofalo, Camryn Manheim and Julia Campbell. Joining the cast are also Keegan-Michael Key, Breckin Meyer and Patrick Warburton.

The original film, released in theaters in 1997, followed two friends from Los Angeles who try to impress their high school classmates at a reunion in Tucson, Arizona, while pretending to have succeeded professionally. In 2005, ABC aired the film "Romy and Michele: In the Beginning," starring Katherine Heigl and Alexandra Breckenridge. In 2017, a musical inspired by the original film opened in Seattle.

The new film was written by Robin Schiff, creator of the first film, and will be directed by Tim Federle, of "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series." The production also rehired the original film's costume designer, Mona May, known for "Clueless" and "Enchanted." According to May, the new film's art design will preserve the stylistic line that characterized the original characters.

The new film, which will not be released in theaters, is set to arrive in 2027 on Hulu and is expected to be available on Disney Plus outside the United States.
