Universal Pictures released the first teaser on Tuesday for "Shrek 5," the fifth film in the hit animated franchise. The movie is scheduled for theatrical release in July 2027, marking the green ogre's return to the big screen 17 years after the previous installment.
The original voice cast is back, with Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Fiona. They will be joined by Zendaya, comedian Marcelo Hernandez, and Skyler Gisondo, who voice Felicia, Fergus, and Farkle, Shrek and Fiona's children, now shown as adults.
The teaser also revealed a noticeable change in the animation's visual style, something Donkey explicitly comments on in the clip. The story will follow the characters' return to Far Far Away, where they are expected to meet new figures, including a snowman character that nods to a similar figure from Disney's "Frozen." It also confirms the return of beloved supporting characters such as Gingy, the gingerbread man.
The teaser ends with the heroes locked in a detention cell, hinting at the film's central plot. The Shrek franchise began in 2001 and remains one of DreamWorks Animation's most profitable properties. Although the main series ended in 2010, the brand has stayed popular through the "Puss in Boots" films, the latest of which was released in 2022 and received critical praise.
