Israeli Authorities Charge 19-Year-Old East Jerusalem Militant with Armed Attacks and Drug Trafficking

A serious indictment was filed on Tuesday against 19-year-old Omar Khalifa from the Shuafat refugee camp in East Jerusalem. The charges cover a range of security offenses, weapons violations, and drug trafficking committed over several years. Authorities also requested his detention until the conclusion of legal proceedings.

According to the indictment, between 2023 and 2024, Khalifa participated in multiple violent riots near the Shuafat checkpoint. Two notable incidents were linked to the demolition of his home and the anniversary of the killing of militant Odai Tamimi, who carried out a 2022 shooting attack at the checkpoint that killed soldier Noa Lazar and injured others. During these events, Khalifa threw stones, paint bottles, and Molotov cocktails at security forces, helped prepare riot materials, and was involved in setting fire to a road blockade.

The indictment further states that after being wounded in a local shooting conflict last year, Khalifa began daily trafficking of dangerous drugs within the refugee camp and surrounding areas. He also illegally purchased and carried two handguns worth tens of thousands of shekels. On one occasion, he fired a handgun to test its functionality, and on another, he returned fire during a violent dispute in the camp.

Charges against Khalifa include rioting, manufacturing and transporting weapons, arson, attempted aggravated assault on police officers, drug trafficking, illegal acquisition, possession and carrying of firearms, and discharging a firearm in a residential area. The case highlights ongoing security challenges in East Jerusalem's Shuafat camp and the intersection of militant activity with criminal behavior.
