Police Exchange Fire With Gunmen in Southern Israel, One Seriously Injured

A violent confrontation erupted in Tel Sheva, southern Israel, on Tuesday when police responding to a clash between feuding families came under gunfire. Several bullets struck a police vehicle, prompting officers to return fire toward the shooters. One individual was seriously wounded and evacuated to Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba for treatment. The incident began during routine police patrols when officers attempted to intervene in the violent dispute involving gunfire between two families. After the shooting, local residents gathered around the police, necessitating reinforcements to restore order.

This shooting is part of a broader escalation of violence in the Negev region. Earlier in the week, police and National Guard forces were called to Rahat following reports of gunfire and fireworks after a football match, which escalated into stone-throwing at officers and resulted in five arrests. Concurrently, security forces have been conducting extensive operations to locate illegal weapons and ammunition in the area.

In recent raids near the municipal community center in Rahat, police discovered four fragmentation grenades in a public garden. Additional searches in open areas and residences, aided by police dogs, uncovered a Carlo submachine gun, three more grenades, thousands of automatic weapon rounds, M16 rifle parts, and cash. A 30-year-old local woman was detained for possession of the seized arms. Authorities continue their efforts to curb the rising violence and illegal arms trafficking in southern Israeli communities.
