Israeli Police Shoot at Suspects in Negev, Five Injured; Protection Racket Busted in Beersheba
On Monday morning, Israeli police operating in the Negev town of Ar'ara opened fire on a suspicious vehicle allegedly involved in shooting at another car. According to medical sources, five individuals were injured with varying severity, including serious and moderate wounds, and were evacuated to Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba. Three of the injured were arrested at the scene. The incident occurred during a police operational activity in the southern district. A search of the vehicle uncovered a handgun and magazines believed to have been used by the suspects.
The police stated that they continue their operational efforts to restore order in the area. This event follows recent violent incidents in Ar'ara, including an attack about ten days ago where unknown assailants fired at the home of the local council head, Dr. Nazar Abu Akel, causing property damage but no injuries. Approximately a week earlier, a resident named Samir Abu Arar was fatally shot in his car, allegedly due to a neighborhood dispute.
In a related development, the police revealed the exposure of a protection racket targeting business owners in Beersheba. This was uncovered through an undercover police officer working as a business owner in the city's industrial zone over the past year. Criminal elements from the Bedouin community reportedly demanded protection money amounting to tens of thousands of shekels through threats and extortion.
During the undercover operation, evidence was gathered against dozens of suspects, including key figures in the southern district. The suspects allegedly caused property damage to coerce business owners into paying protection fees. Early Monday, Border Police, detectives from the southern district, and other officers conducted extensive raids on the homes of suspects across the Bedouin communities and other southern and national locations, resulting in dozens of arrests. The detainees were transferred for interrogation and are expected to appear in Beersheba Magistrate's Court for detention extension hearings.
