Israeli Police Arrest Dozens in Major Protection Racket Sting in Beersheba
Israeli police conducted a large-scale raid on Monday targeting dozens of suspects involved in extorting business owners in Beersheba and surrounding southern communities. The operation followed an undercover investigation led by the Negev District Unit, in which a police informant posed as a business owner in the Beersheba industrial zone. During the covert operation, the informant was approached by criminal elements from the Bedouin diaspora who allegedly demanded protection money amounting to tens of thousands of shekels under threats.
The suspects were arrested and transferred to the Negev Central Unit for interrogation. They are expected to appear later at the Beersheba Magistrate’s Court for detention extension hearings. The investigation, supervised by the Southern District Prosecutor’s Office, uncovered a well-organized extortion network that coerced business owners into paying protection fees by threatening property damage.
The police operation involved multiple units working in coordination, including the Border Police’s National Guard fighters, Negev District detectives, officers from the Rotem and Negev regions, the aerial unit, and other specialized national and district forces. The crackdown aims to dismantle the criminal mechanism exploiting local businesses’ vulnerability and fear of harm to their property.
