Aviatar Geva Appointed Head Coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv Handball Team
Aviatar Geva, 33, has been named the new head coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv's handball team for the 2026/2027 season. Geva, who previously served as assistant coach under Chen Pomerantz, will replace Pomerantz, who is moving to coach in Germany. Alongside his new role with the senior team, Geva will continue coaching the club's youth team, Maccabi Raanana Tel Aviv, which he led to a national championship last season, a title the club had not won in 20 years.
Geva also serves as assistant coach for Israel's under-21 national team alongside Pomerantz, with the team set to depart for the European Championship qualifiers in Romania. A former player for Maccabi Holon for six seasons, Geva has extensive experience as an assistant coach in the Israeli Premier League and previously coached AS Ramat Hasharon, helping them win a double title in 2023/2024.
Upon his appointment, Geva expressed enthusiasm for the new challenge, emphasizing the responsibility entrusted to him and his commitment to leading Maccabi Tel Aviv to a top position in Israeli handball. He thanked the club's management for their confidence and praised his collaboration with Pomerantz over the past two years.
Eyal Prolinger, chairman of Maccabi Tel Aviv's handball department, welcomed Geva's promotion, highlighting his eight years of assistant coaching experience and confidence in his ability to lead the professional team. Prolinger noted that the club immediately chose Geva as Pomerantz's successor, wishing him success in his new role.
