Suspect Michael Olpovitch Identified in Ashdod Woman's Murder Case
Michael Olpovitch, 66, from Ashdod, is the main suspect in the stabbing murder of his 65-year-old wife last week. The victim was found dead in their home by their daughter, who immediately alerted the police and emergency services. The woman's identity remains under gag order. The investigation is currently handled by the Lachish District Police. On Thursday, a magistrate court judge in Ashkelon, Yaniv Ben Harosh, approved partial publication of the suspect's identity, citing the public interest and the constitutional rights of freedom of expression and press, while rejecting police concerns about compromising the investigation.
The murder occurred on Sunday, June 21, when emergency responders arrived at the Ashdod residence at 8:00 a.m. and found the woman with stab wounds and no signs of life. Paramedics confirmed her death at the scene. Olpovitch was arrested at the scene, reportedly injured in the hand. The case highlights the ongoing serious issue of violence against women in Israel.
