Brazilian Authorities Capture Jaguar Roaming Residential Areas in Foz do Iguaçu
A 4-5-year-old male jaguar weighing approximately 75 kilograms was safely captured in a large-scale operation in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, after being spotted wandering residential neighborhoods. The predator was first recorded on security cameras roaming streets, sidewalks, and parks. After briefly returning to a nearby forested area, it reappeared the next day in a different neighborhood.
Wildlife experts, environmental protection authorities, and security forces collaborated to tranquilize and capture the jaguar without harm. The animal was taken to a veterinary hospital for comprehensive examinations, including X-rays and blood tests, and treated for a superficial back wound. Officials confirmed the jaguar is in good health with no serious injuries.
Authorities announced that after a recovery period, the jaguar will be fitted with a tracking collar and released into a remote area away from human settlements. Experts noted an increase in jaguar sightings near populated zones in recent years, mainly due to their movement between protected forest areas in the tri-border region of Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay.
