Portland Trail Blazers Acquire Ja Morant in Major Trade with Memphis Grizzlies

The Portland Trail Blazers officially announced the acquisition of guard Ja Morant from the Memphis Grizzlies in a trade completed overnight between Monday and Tuesday, June 30, 2026. In exchange, Portland sent Jeremy Grant and Chris Murray to Memphis. The early offseason trade confirms Morant will start the upcoming NBA season with Portland, with no further trades involving him allowed until September. The deal did not include any draft picks.

Morant, who averaged 19.5 points and 8.1 assists over 20 games this season and appeared in 79 games across the last three seasons, had expressed a desire to join Portland. He was reportedly pleased with the professional fit, and is expected to initially play alongside Damian Lillard. Portland also received about one million dollars in cash as part of the transaction.

Currently, Portland has four senior point guards on their roster: Morant, Lillard, Scott Henderson, and Jerru Holiday, along with shooting guard Jaydon Sharp. NBA analyst Shams Charania noted that the Blazers have stepped out of the running to acquire Jalen Brown, making Morant the most significant new star joining the team. However, further trades are anticipated as Portland gave up two forwards who had significant playing time, Murray and Grant, while center Robert Williams became a free agent. Additional moves involving Henderson or Sharp are possible, especially given Portland's extensive collection of draft picks.
