NBA Champion Predicts Ja Morant Trade From Trail Blazers

Former NBA champion Channing Frye believes the Portland Trail Blazers may view star guard Ja Morant as a short-term asset rather than a long-term fixture.

Frye suggested on the "Road Trippin" podcast that the Blazers acquired Morant, who joined Portland this summer after seven seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies, with the intention of rebuilding his value and then trading him. This strategy, Frye posits, would allow Portland to continue developing its young core, including Israeli player Deni Avdija.

Morant, a two-time All-Star, is looking to revitalize his career in Portland after a period marred by injuries and off-court issues. However, Frye theorizes that the Blazers aim to maximize Morant's performance during his tenure, making him an attractive trade piece for other teams.

Frye elaborated that Portland's current focus might not be immediate championship contention but rather facilitating a proper send-off for Damian Lillard, their long-time star. He suggested Morant's role is to play well, increase his trade value, and then be moved, enabling the Blazers to re-enter the draft lottery for more young talent.

This scenario could provide Portland with significant financial flexibility, especially concerning Avdija's future contract. The team currently faces a crowded backcourt with Morant, Lillard, and Jrue Holiday, all capable of playing point guard. The Blazers aim to balance their veteran presence with the development of younger players like Avdija and Scoot Henderson.
