Rafael to Supply Romania with Over €2 Billion Air Defense Systems
Israeli defense company Rafael has signed a strategic agreement with Romania's Ministry of Defense to supply the SPYDER air defense system in a deal valued at over two billion euros. The contract aims to enhance Romania's protection against aerial threats such as aircraft, helicopters, and drones, with deliveries expected to begin within 36 months of signing. The agreement includes a comprehensive package of launchers, interceptors, radar systems, training, and logistical support, with significant local production and industrial cooperation in Romania.
This acquisition strengthens Romania's commitment to NATO standards and advanced defense solutions. The SPYDER system, which uses Rafael's Python and Derby air-to-air missiles, is a mobile, modular air defense platform capable of intercepting a wide range of threats and has been previously adopted by several NATO and EU countries. Rafael has maintained a long-standing partnership with Romania, supplying tactical missile, electro-optical, and communication systems for over three decades, supporting Romania's air, land, and naval forces.
Rafael's Chairman, Yuval Steinitz, described the deal as a testament to the company's technological leadership and ongoing excellence in air defense. CEO Yoav Turgeman highlighted that this is Rafael's largest contract to date and reflects growing European confidence in Rafael's battle-proven systems. He also emphasized the commitment to deepening cooperation with the Romanian defense industry through local manufacturing.
The SPYDER system's rapid response capability and flexible architecture enable it to protect strategic assets even in complex air environments, adapting to evolving operational needs. This deal marks a significant milestone in the defense collaboration between Israel and Romania, reinforcing mutual trust and operational compatibility.
