Rafael Signs $2 Billion Deal to Supply Romania with Spyder Air Defense Systems
Israeli defense company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has signed a framework agreement with the Romanian Ministry of Defense worth approximately 2 billion euros. The deal involves supplying Romania with multiple Spyder air defense systems, designed to counter short- and medium-range aerial threats. Rafael did not disclose the exact number of batteries to be delivered but confirmed the package includes launchers, interceptor missiles, radar systems, and comprehensive training and logistical support for Romanian forces.
The delivery of these advanced air defense systems is expected to begin within three years. The Spyder system is a mobile surface-to-air defense platform based on Rafael's Python-5 and Derby air-to-air missiles, adapted for ground defense against a wide range of aerial threats including fighter jets, helicopters, drones, and precision-guided munitions. Rafael highlights the system's effectiveness in protecting strategic assets in complex and dynamic operational environments.
Romania joins other countries such as the Czech Republic, India, Vietnam, and Cyprus in acquiring the Spyder system in recent years, reflecting its growing adoption across Europe and Asia.
