Rafael Signs €2 Billion Deal to Supply Romania with Spyder Air Defense Systems
Israeli defense company Rafael and Romania's Ministry of Defense have signed a framework agreement worth approximately €2 billion for the supply of Spyder air defense systems. These systems, developed and manufactured by Rafael, are designed to counter short- and medium-range aerial threats. Under the agreement, Rafael committed to delivering multiple Spyder air defense batteries to the Romanian military, though the exact number of units was not disclosed.
The deal includes launchers, interceptor missiles, radar systems, as well as training and logistical support for the Romanian forces operating the defense systems. The Spyder system is a mobile air defense platform based on Rafael's Python-5 and Derby air-to-air missiles, adapted for ground-based defense against a wide range of aerial threats.
