Beersheba Woman Detained After Reporting Partner Violence, Later Released on Bail
A 44-year-old woman from Beersheba was arrested on suspicion of assaulting police officers who responded to her call about violence from her partner. The police requested to extend her detention by six days, citing that she had insulted and pushed the officers. However, on Sunday, Beersheba Magistrate Judge Yaniv Ben Harosh ordered her release on bail, stating there was no justification for her detention.
The incident began when the woman initially contacted the police to report domestic violence. She was brought to the station to file a complaint but reportedly left before speaking to an officer. Police then went to her home, where she allegedly insulted and pushed them. During the investigation, she expressed regret and apologized. Judge Ben Harosh noted that while her behavior was inappropriate, she was the one who invited the police to her home and unexpectedly found herself detained.
The Israel Police stated that upon receiving the domestic violence report, officers acted professionally to ensure the woman's safety. After she refused to file a complaint at the station and left, police maintained contact due to concerns for her welfare. Upon returning to her home, officers heard shouting and, after entering, detained her on suspicion of assaulting police. The court later reviewed the case and ordered her release under conditions. The police affirmed their commitment to handling domestic violence reports with sensitivity and determination.
Attorney Ahmad Saadi, representing the woman through the Public Defender's Office, described the case as difficult and troubling. He emphasized that the woman, claiming to be a victim, sought help voluntarily but was immediately told she was detained. Saadi criticized this as a severe violation of personal dignity and public trust in law enforcement.
