Israel’s Police Internal Investigations Department filed a serious indictment on Wednesday against Oshir Amar, a 29-year-old officer at the Beersheba police station, accusing him of assaulting his girlfriend, also a police officer at the same station, and threatening her. The case, submitted by Attorney Daniel Shahar, says the two served as shift commanders in the patrol unit and had an ongoing romantic relationship.
According to the indictment, on May 31 the couple spoke by phone at 4:00 a.m. after rumors spread at the station that Amar was cheating on her with another female officer. They agreed to meet, and the complainant, 25, came to his home in Beersheba’s Neve Yaakov neighborhood. After talking outside, they went upstairs to his apartment, where an argument broke out over the sofa in the living room.
The indictment says Amar threatened to kill her, telling her, among other things, “Anyone who talks about me, I will kill. I will kill both you and him.” It says he then grabbed her throat with both hands and strangled her, until she began crying and vomiting. She stayed in the apartment for about an hour and a half before leaving. He was charged with simple assault of a spouse and threats.
A few days later, the two spoke again, and Amar allegedly repeated threats against her life and the lives of others. In the recorded conversation, he said, “Whoever woke up the devil, will meet him,” called her “ugly face,” and said, “Whoever talks about me, I will take his life,” adding that it did not matter who it was. He also told her, “If I had decided in my head to kill you, I would have put a bullet in you the moment you came home,” and challenged her to record the call and file a complaint. He was charged again with threats over that conversation.
