Shane Larkin set to join Fenerbahce in unusual self-financed move
Fenerbahce is putting together a notable EuroLeague summer, with the Turkish club reaching agreements in the past 24 hours for three major EuroLeague players, led by Shane Larkin. The 33-year-old guard has spent the last eight years with Anadolu Efes, Fenerbahce’s rival.
Larkin is under contract with Anadolu Efes through the summer of 2028 and earns close to $4 million per season. Because he wants to leave, he will give up the money due to him over the final two years of the deal, and he will also personally compensate Anadolu Efes.
According to BasketNews, Larkin will pay $400,000 out of pocket to complete the move. That is an unusual step in European basketball, where players are rarely the ones paying to get released, and the amount is roughly equal to a monthly salary for him.
He will also take a significant pay cut at Fenerbahce. Reports in Europe say he is expected to sign a two-year contract worth between $2.5 million and $3 million per season. The move means Larkin will lose a substantial amount of money overall in order to switch clubs.
